According to TheOfficeGuide.com

Plastic comb bindings have teeth that fit into holes punched in the edge of the paper.  Comb binding machines are relatively inexpensive and can be purchased to do the job yourself.  Comb bindings are economical and provide a professional look, as well as allow your book to lay flat when opened.

Our Binding Equipment page provides more information about other binding types and the equipment used.
